BACKGROUND:

We hear about children battling cancer way too often. The good news is, that many of these children could be saved – if only they could find a bone marrow donor. But, then – there is the issue of funds. Today’s story is about a community, who rallies around a 3-year old girl in such a position. Charike Kotzé from Emalahleni’s single mom, Charmaine hoped that they were winning the battle when a donor was identified in Germany – however, it was not a good enough match – and the search is on again … as long as the funds last.

ORIGINAL REQUEST:

Dear Good Morning Angels,

Charike Kotzé is a 3-year old who was diagnosed with Bi-phneotypic Leukemia - an acute Myeloid and Limfotishe Leukemia -  in November 2012. She started treatment at the same time. She is still on chemo medication and drinks a pill every evening. She does however need a bone marrow transplant. During the first search, a donor was found in Germany. Unfortunately, it turned out not to be a close enough match. The transplant has been authorised by the medical aid for R 75 000,00. Charike's mom, Charmaine, is a single parent. She is supported by her mother as Charmaine has to take care of Charike, making it impossible for Charmaine to work and earn an income.

At this stage an international search for a bone marrow donor has to start.

It is difficult to determine the final cost and we have helped as well as we could to raise funds. These funds are being managed by an independent firm of attorneys, Krugel & Heinsen at no cost.

The following costs might be incurred during the transplant, depending on the situation.

Transplant: R250 000

Donor search: R90 000

Procurement in case of international donor R240 000 – R400 000 (Fluctuation due to exchange rate)

Procurement of national donor: R160 000

I do believe that this is a worthy cause and might change the life of a little girl, her mom and grandmother, if sufficient funds could be raised. During a fund raising golf day we managed to raise in the excess of R100 000 towards the Charike Cancer fund. We are hoping that if more people are made aware of their plight, that we could raise some more funds, to make this life saving bone marrow transplant possible.
